Sierra of Pozo at 45 minutes by car: The municipality of Zujar is situated between the subbetic mountain ranges, in an area which is called Altiplano de Grenada. Its particular orography is due to its location, between the Sierra of Baza in the south, the Basin of Baza and the Sierra del Pozo in the north. The Town of Zujar is built on the slopes of Mount Jabalcon, an isolated elevation which reaches an altitude of 1.496 m. Its territorial extention presents a series of high plateaus dug out by the action of water, and which have formed a network of chasms and ravines all descending towards the riverbed of the Guadiana Menor, from the right-hand side (buttresses of the sierra del Pozo) and from the left (plains and buttresses of the Sierra of Baza). Currently, this bed is occupied by the Negratin lake , zone of junction of all the orographical and hydrographic elements in the municipality.
In addition to the barren and dry grounds, because of its limestone nature, the agglomeration of Zujar is located on a zone of subsoil waters . The many wells allowed the existence of a luxuriant market-gardening zone cultivated since long forgotten times. The buttresses of Mount Jabalcon, on its northern slope, offer a landscape of pine forests, the result of the repopulation of trees policy which dates from the middle of the XXth century. Towards the north, one goes up between ravines and the Guadalentin river, towards the Sierra del Pozo and the Sierra de Cazorla. That way one arrives at the small hamlet of Carramaiza, which is wedged in the middle of the plateaus of the same name, extending while going up all the way to the limits of the province of Jaen. The landscapes of this municipality are absolutely unique in the whole province of Granada, because of the great contrasts created by its diversity. On the road, between the lodging and the Sierra, you can visitthe village of Orce, its Arab castle and its prehistoric museum. A nice little halt in retaurant “Mimbrera”,an old prison the food is very goodl and the personnel is very friendly.
